Ever wondered how this breath taking phenomenon occurs? During large explosions and flares, huge quantities of solar particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. These travel through space, and when closing in, they are captured by the earth's magnetic field and guided towards the magnetic poles- the South & North Pole.
